Duncan began as “New Hope” in 1811 with a local post office, later renamed “Vernonville” in the 1850s. After the railroad arrived in 1873, Leroy Duncan offered land for streets—on the condition the town be renamed for him. In 1881, it officially became Duncan, and it received its municipal charter in 1889.
